Strathcona Wilderness Institute

Alissia H.

Alissia, who was preparing a remodeling business plan for the Strathcona Wilderness Institute in British Columbia, approached me to create the new visual identity. My role was to design the logo and related graphic assets to represent the organization’s mission and values.

The Strathcona Wilderness Institute (SWI) is a non-profit society, incorporated in 1995, dedicated to promoting responsible and enjoyable use of the remote and natural Strathcona Provincial Park on central Vancouver Island. This park is one of the most iconic wilderness areas on Canada’s west coast, and the logo needed to reflect both its landscape and the organization’s stewardship role.

The final logo is a circular emblem, symbolizing wholeness, unity, and the natural cycle. It combines several key visual elements:

• Hiker – representing exploration, education, and human connection to nature.

• Mountain – symbolizing strength, endurance, and the iconic geography of Strathcona Park.

• Trail/River – evoking the journey into wilderness, movement, and life within the landscape.

• Bird – representing wildlife, freedom, and ecological balance.

• Water Drop / River Flow – referencing purity, sustainability, and the vital natural resources the institute helps protect.

/ Colour Palette /
The colour system draws from earth tones that reflect the natural environment of the park:

• Plant Green – for the vegetation and vitality of the forest.

• River Blue – for water, clarity, and freshness.

• Wood Beige – grounding, warm, and approachable.

• Earth Brown – for soil, land, and stability.

These tones create a palette that is natural, authentic, and approachable while remaining professional and versatile for print, digital, and merchandise applications.

The resulting design balances adventure and preservation. It captures the essence of Strathcona Wilderness Institute’s role: connecting people to the park while advocating for conservation and sustainable enjoyment. The bold typography ensures visibility, while the layered illustration gives the logo a timeless, emblematic quality.
